Opera Workshop MUS 106/406E

Traditional and contemporary musical theater repertoire: opera of all styles and Broadway musicals.  Students prepare individual roles, ensembles, and scenes culminating in public performance.

The Opera Workshop is an auditioned group of singers who rehearse and perform traditional and contemporary musical theatre repertoire including operetta, grand opera, chamber opera, and broadway musicals. Singers prepare individual roles, ensemble music, and scenes from musicals and operas. The opera Workshop gives a public performance each semester. This ensemble is open to all students at the university. An audition testing voice quality, and musicianship is required.

Full productions with orchestra, chorus, sets, costuming and lighting are presented, many times in collaboration with the Humboldt Theatre Arts program. Past productions include: The Secret Garden, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Fiddler on the Roof, Into the Woods, Man of La Mancha, The Magic Flute, The Tales of Hoffmann, La Boheme and Cosi fan tutte.

Also presented from time to time are musical reviews featuring the songs of composers such as Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Stephen Sondheim. Smaller productions of scenes from operas and musicals are also part of this organization's offerings.

Opera Workshop is open to all Humboldt students. Auditions are held at the beginning of each term to cast the specific roles of the works to be presented.
