Cal Poly Humboldt Recital Series: An Adventure Through Video Game Music
The Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre presents “The Cal Poly Humboldt Recital Series: An Adventure Through Video Game Music” Join us Saturday, April 5th at 7:30pm at the FUlkerson recital hall where pianist, Ryan McGaughey, will bring virtuosic classical style piano playing to the world of video game music. Ryan will bring a unique show of video game music on piano, visuals to pair with the music, mini games, giveaways, and audience participation activities! Also in this show, YOU will be choosing the musical adventure we experience. Come and take part in the adventure we construct together! Tickets for the performance are $20 General, $5 for Children, and $5 for Cal Poly Humboldt Students with ID. Ryan McGaughey began piano studies at the age of 12. He attended Humboldt State University for his bachelor's degree and studied under the instruction of Daniela Mineva. He then attended the Eastman School of Music where he received a master’s degree in piano performance studying under Alexander Kobrin. He has been featured as a soloist with the Eureka Symphony, Humboldt Symphony and the North State Symphony. He has participated as a performer in the Round Top Music Festival in Texas and the Atlantic Music Festival in Maine.
Growing up having played video games, Ryan also brings virtuosic classical style piano playing to the world of video game music having performed many video game music concerts around the country and performing complete sets such as the official Final Fantasy VII Piano Collections, Hollow Knight Piano Collections & the Celeste Piano Collections. He’s had several notable appearances at conventions for video game music such as MagFest, MagWest, and VGM Con.
Ryan has received instruction from many world-renowned pianists and distinguished piano instructors such as Nelita True, Natalya Antonova, Douglas Humpherys, Barry Snyder, Bruce Brubaker, Gabriel Chodos, and Eteri Andjaparidze. Ryan has also worked with current composers including American composer, Libby Larsen.
Ryan has done much collaborative work with other musicians ranging from singers to string & wind players, percussionists and even other pianists. He has performed in many ensembles from trios to orchestras, performing works from J.S. Bach and W.A. Mozart to John Cage and Witold Lutosławski.
Ryan is also a composer and has written and premiered his own works for piano, including a work for piano and electronics which was premiered in 2018.
