Please join the Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Music for a diverse double-header of band music featuring the Humboldt Wind Ensemble and the Humboldt Jazz Orchestra on Saturday, October 12th at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall.  Under the baton of Paul Cummings, the Wind Ensemble will play a dynamic program of music from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, including repertoire from France and Russia as well as works by two living American composers.  After a quick reset, band leader Dan Aldag will take the Jazz Orchestra through their paces, playing charts originally composed for groups like the Mingus Big Band and the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, plus an Aldag arrangement of a new work by Boom Tic Boom's Allison Miller, who is a popular guest of the Redwood Jazz Alliance. $10 General, $5 Child, FREE for Humboldt students with ID.

In 1887, composer Camille Saint-Saëns composed his quick-step march Pas Redoublé for piano four-hands.  The Wind Ensemble will share Arthur Frackenpohl's 1972 arrangement for full concert band.  Next on the program is a band arrangement by popular American composer Frank Ticheli of his own earlier choral work called "There Will Be Rest," based on text by the American lyric poet Sara Teasedale.  Each and every section of the ensemble gets to have fun as Brant Karrick's Bayou Breakdown pulsates through the hall.  And finally, the concert band arrangement of the "Finale" of Symphony No. 1 by Russian orchestral composer Vasily Kalinnikov displays the romantic power of the composer's setting of melody and integration of Slavic folk music into the music of the concert hall.

After a brief intermission, Aldag presents a tight group of great jazz past and present, starting with a Ronnie Cuber arrangement of Charles Mingus' "Nostalgia in Times Square, followed by Benny Goldson's "Stablemates" featuring Andrew Henderson on trumpet, Allison Miller's new chart "The Ride," and a Mark Taylor arrangement of Bud Powell's "Celia" featuring Jesse Garate on tenor sax.  This will be a great evening of music not to be missed!
