Dr. Paul Cummings is currently an Associate Professor of Music at Humboldt State University, where he directs the Humboldt Symphony and the Symphonic Band.  He also serves as coordinator of the music education program. In February, 2011, he was recognized as Music Educator of the Year by the North Coast Section of the California Music Educators Association (CMEA). He served on the Board of Directors of CMEA during 2008-11, and is currently serving as president of the Western Division of the College Orchestra Directors Association (2013-14).
He began his teaching career in California as an instrumental music specialist in the Oak Grove School District in San Jose, followed by similar positions in Campbell and Palo Alto. Dr. Cummings also taught lecture courses in music history at Chapman University and the University of California at Santa Cruz. His bands and orchestras at Palo Alto High School performed to critical acclaim at numerous festivals, as well as on tour in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vancouver, British Columbia. His conducting teachers include Robert Ponto, Tim Reynish, Robert Hornyak, Robert Halseth, Allan McMurray, and Frederick Fennell.
Publications include articles in the Teaching Music Through Performance series published by GIA and several articles in CMEA Magazine. He has presented sessions at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago (2009), the Western – Northwestern Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association (2006, 2008), and the California Music Educators Association Conference (2007, 2008). In January, 2014, he will present a session at the national conference of the College Orchestra Directors Association conference in Ft. Worth, Texas. In February, 2014, he will present a clinic with the Amador Valley High School Orchestra at the California All-State Music Educators Conference (CASMEC) in Fresno, California.
Dr. Cummings is also active as a performer on clarinet. He has performed in numerous Faculty Artist Series recitals at Humboldt State University. He also serves as a clinician and adjudicator for ensembles throughout California and Nevada.
