Biography: 

Soprano ANNIKA BÄCKSTRÖM, DMA in vocal performance with a supporting area in ethnomusicology from the University of Oregon, BFA and MA degrees in theatre and music from the University of Illinois, as well as extensive studies at Stockholm and Malmö opera houses. After completing her doctoral degree, she was awarded an individual artist grant from the Oregon Arts Commission. She currently teaches voice and music history at Cal Poly Humboldt as well as introduction to music theory and voice at College of the Redwoods.

Annika has a wide vocal repertoire from performing leading roles in operas, such as La Traviata, The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute and the world premiere of Wournos, classical concerts, oratorios, recitals to indigenous Sami jojk, folk-and art songs. She performs solo recitals in Sweden and the United States as well as teaches voice and leads workshops. Her work and research about creativity in music, and how to engage creativity and imagination in performance, has brought her across the US, Canada and Sweden. She is passionate about her Sami indigenous lineage and spreading awareness about the indigenous people of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Russian Kola peninsula. In her teaching, she draws from her academic work and personal experiences in music, theatre, indigenous studies, foreign languages and bodymind work.
