John W. DeLodder Music Composition Competition

This competition is open to fully-matriculated Cal Poly Humboldt students. You do not need to be a Music major to apploy. Competition will be in the amount of $1000.

Qualifications for the John W. DeLodder Competition:

  1. Three minutes minimum duration of an original composition/song composed for voice with accompaniment, instrumental combos for jazz, blues and other genres or a through composed work for two or more instruments.
  2. Scores must be submitted in electronic form, with an accompanying audio file. Lead sheets comprised of the melody, lyrics and chord symbols will be accepted for voice with accompaniment or combo pieces. Please send the audio file with a PDF of the score or lead sheet directly to: Brian Post at jbp5@humboldt.edu with DeLodder Competition in the heading of the email. Or submit a printed version of the score and an audio recording to the Humboldt Music Department Office, room 143 in Music B.
  3. Enrollment in or intent to pursue the Composition Option is preferred but not required.
  4. Three faculty members will evaluate scores for concepts of composition, creativity and the interaction of the instruments.
  5. Applications may be picked up at the Humboldt Music Department Office located in Music B room 143
  6. Two compositions maximum may be submitted
  7. All entrants must be a registered student of Cal Poly Humboldt
  8. The winner of the previous semester must wait a semester before applying to the competition again.
  9. Fall Semester submissions can be submitted by email until Monday November 26, 2018 - 5:00PM. The winner will be announced and a check will be issued to the winning composer at the Composers Read Thru Recital, Monday, December 3, 2018 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.
