AM Jazz Band and Jazz Orchestra Concerts

Please join the Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Music and band leader Dan Aldag as they present two fantastic jazz concerts in one weekend, featuring the AM Jazz Band on Thursday, May 9th, and the Jazz Orchestra on Saturday, May 11th, with both concerts starting at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. The AM Jazz Band will play six arrangements of familiar jazz classics, including Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay," Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa," Sonny Rollins' "Doxy," Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder," Miles Davis's "So What," and the standard "Out Of Nowhere." The Jazz Orchestra will perform a great set starting with Thelonious Monk's "Hackensack," arranged by the New York-based, Japanese-born Miho Hazama, with solos by Rebekka Lopez on alto sax and Conner West on guitar.  Horace Silver's "Doodlin'," originally arranged by Ernie Wilkins for Dizzy Gillespie's big band, will feature Jeff Ruiz on trumpet.  Up next will be Cedar Walton's "Bolivia," arranged by Eric Richards, with solos by Rebekka Lopez on alto sax, Max Marlowe on piano, and Jesse Garate on tenor sax.  A Mike Tomaro arrangement of Chick Corea's "Armando's Rhumba" will feature solos by Andrew Henderson on trumpet, Jesse Garate on tenor sax, and Mike Deason on drums. Mark Taylor's arrangement of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Só Danço Samba" will follow, with Mikel Mayorga singing the lyrics in the original Portuguese. Seattle-based trumpeter Cuong Vu's "Solitary Confinement," arranged by Greg Sinibaldi, will include solos by Jesse Garate on tenor sax, Ora Folden on trombone, and Jeff Ruiz on trumpet.  And finally, Bud Powell's "Parisian Thoroughfare," arranged by Dan Aldag, will spotlight soloists Andrew Henderson on trumpet and Jesse Garate on tenor sax.  $10 General, $5 Child, $5 Humboldt students with ID.
